| "Tea
- What Coffee Drinkers Should Know"
Before
you pour your next cup of coffee here is some food
for thought.
There
have been several studies that concluded tea; either
black, green or Earl Grey, may help prevent several
diseases. Sorry herbal tea drinkers! These teas
(herbal tea) are derived from entirely different
plants do not carry the same benefits. According to
the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition
published in April 2000; women age 65 to 75 that
drank at least one cup of the afore mentioned teas
each day had considerably higher bone density in
their thighs and spine than women of the same age
who had not drank tea. Another study done by the
Cambridge School of Medicine also concluded that tea
may protect against osteoporosis.
The
antioxidants in tea may be a key component in why it
benefits bones density. Researchers have found that
tea antioxidants, called polyphones, may be 100
times more effective than vitamin C and 25 times
more effective than vitamin E. Green and Black
Tea’s polyphenols have the ability to protect the
body from free radical damage which in turn protects
the body against cancer and lowers heart disease. A
Oct. 11th 1999 issue of Archives of Internal
Medicine showed that women age 55 or older, who
drank as little as one cup of tea a day, were 54%
less likely to have serve arteriosclerosis, which
can lead to heart attacks. Along with benefits to
the internal organs Green Tea has been found to
block the attachment of bacteria to the teeth,
protecting against cavities and several hours in the
dentist chair.
Additional
research has established that these antioxidants
also work to prevent "bad" LDL cholesterol
which promotes the plaque build up that clogs
arteries. This aids the arteries that supply the
body and the heart with nourishment. A number of
studies have determined that tea may be a valuable
weapon in the fight of some cancers of the stomach,
prostate and bladder. It was also recently revealed
that smokers who have been tea drinkers have lower
incidences of lung cancer.
All
this research probably has you running out to buy a
tea kettle. By all means include some black or green
tea in your daily routine, your body will thank you
for it.
